The Continuous Quality Improvement Project

The Continuous Quality Improvement Project (CQIP) is a collaborative effort between the California Department of Public Health, Cancer Detection Section (CDS), and the Institute for Public Health at San Diego State University, Graduate School of Public Health.

The CQIP, formerly the Quality Assurance Project (QAP), was established to assess and improve the quality and effectiveness of California's statewide breast and cervical cancer detection program providers. This included medical record abstraction of representative samples of women served by the Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts.

Today, the CQIP continues to assist with the identification of quality assurance issues, and also has a major emphasis on the development and implementation of education and training programs for primary care providers involved in cancer screening throughout California and the nation. The list of cancer topics has expanded beyond breast and cervical cancer to include colon and prostate cancer.

The CQIP collaborates with health care professional organizations, health professional schools, residency programs, and malpractice carriers. This website is proud to host professional development and quality improvement products and services developed and presented by the CDS Continuous Quality Improvement Unit and the CQIP.

Mission Statement

The CQIP is dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare delivery for women and men participating in the California Department of Public Health, Cancer Detection Section Programs through evidence-based evaluation and education.

Project Goals

  1. To identify quality assurance issues that should be addressed to improve service delivery to eligible women and men.
  2. To develop innovative evidence-based provider training strategies that address identified quality assurance issues.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of provider training strategies.
  4. To continue to monitor the quality of program services by providing ongoing medical record review, identification of quality assurance issues, and the development of provider training strategies.
  5. To develop evidence-based cancer education materials for providers and patients.

Funding

The Continuous Quality Improvement Project (CQIP) is funded through a contract with the California Cancer Detection Section (CDS) and administered by the San Diego State University Research Foundation (SDSURF). CDS is part of the California Department of Public Health's Chronic Disease and Injury Control Division, and manages multi-faceted public health programs for breast, cervical, colon and prostate cancer. SDSURF was incorporated in 1943 as an auxiliary organization authorized by the Education Code of the state of California, and is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, self-financed, and chartered to provide and augment programs that are an integral part of the educational mission of San Diego State University.
