Screening Guidelines
The American Cancer Society (ACS) 2004 guidelines
for early breast cancer detection consist of a clinical breast examination (CBE)
every three years in women between the ages of 20 and 39 years, and annually for
women aged 40 and older. Women at average risk should begin regular mammography
at age 40 years. Annual breast cancer screening for women 40 and older consists of a clinical breast
examination and mammographic imaging of both breasts.
Women at increased risk for breast cancer may benefit from earlier initiation
of screening, screening at shorter intervals, and screening with additional methods
such as ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (Smith, 2004).
The US Preventative Services Task Force (USPTF) 2002 guidelines recommend screening mammography, with or without clinical breast examination every 1-2 years for women aged 40 and older.
CDS requires a CBE prior to a mammogram for women being served in the Cancer Detection Programs: Every Woman Counts.
